OpenCongress

Lawrence Lessig retweeted this today:

#OCv3 lets you email all your members of #Congress & include campaign donation data: bit.ly/nTAV8i

The good parts (with commentary) from the Press Release:

…”write a letter to all three of your members of the U.S. Congress, all from one webpage, send it immediately over email, and then track & share the correspondence in a transparent public forum.”

…the “Contact-Congress” part of this v.3 is “powered by” Formaggedon – an open source project. Appreciating another funny-named open source project even more with this use of it.

…there’s the obligatory OpenCongress Community-discussion-social-media thingy, “MyOC Groups”. (Terrible name aside, it sounds like it’s trying to do too many different things, and looking to build a community instead of leveraging existing ones.)

…it helps you draft your letter to congress by offering bill specifics and help with citing groups involved with the legislation you’re writing about….

…”While composing [sic] click on campaign finance data about special-interest groups that have taken a position on the bill to add it to your letter. You can also… add information about a bill’s status, its popularity”

…programmers might want to look at the upgraded API to see if there’s any gold to be mined.
